Biking to Florida Wine Country

As a follow-up to my last post, I thought I would address the issue of biking to wineries here in Florida. On the surface, biking to wineries seems more like a West Coast activity, but Florida does, in fact, have its own wine country. Floridians can go on “wiking” (excuse me while I vomit over that silly word) trips if they so choose.

The closest winery to Jacksonville is the San Sebastian Winery in St. Augustine, and there’s a cluster of wineries around Gainsville. It wouldn’t be too hard to plan a bike trip to hit up those wineries.

I did a search for “Florida Wine Country Bike Tours” but came up with zip. All of the search results were for California. That’s not surprising. California does dominate the American wine industry, California cities do tend to be more bike friendly, and Californians do tend to be really into healthy things like biking. So it is right that California winery bike tours should be the most popular.

However, there’s no reason why we can’t put bike tours of Florida wine country on the map! If you bike to Florida wineries, post your route on bikejax.org! Use this map to find wineries and plan your trip: http://www.tryfloridawine.com/florida-wineries-map.php.
